The happy winner of the Sefer Torah, Harav David Dahan, from Rechovot.

The winner of this year’s Yad L’Achim Sefer Torah raffle, its ninth, was the Dahan family of Pinchas Muksai Street in Rehovot. The raffle, conducted last Thursday, on the eve of Shavuos, the holiday of the giving of the Torah, was supervised by the accountant Menachem Ackerman.

Yad L’Achim’s spokesman Shlomo Reisel was given the honor of calling the winners with the good news and the response moved everyone in the office. Mrs. Dahan, who picked up the phone, said in a voice choked with emotion that it had been her dream to dedicate a Sefer Torah in memory of her sister who died at just 26, while still caring for three young children.
“I signed up for this lottery because I wanted to dedicate a Sefer Torah in memory of my sister, a”h,” she said. “I am simply overwhelmed, I’ve never won a lottery.”

Her husband, Rabbi David Dahan, was also moved. “I always wanted to merit to fulfil the mitzvah of writing a Sefer Torah. Even if I had won a lottery of millions of shekels it wouldn’t have been the same. Money comes and goes, but a holy Sefer Torah remains forever. I’m so happy,” he said, adding, “I daven that we merit to dedicate this Sefer Torah together with Moshiach Tzidkeinu.”

Yad L’Achim released a statement thanking the “thousands who participated in the lottery, who all merited to be partners in expanding our activities and rescuing more and more Jewish souls.”
